The blockbuster movie MARTY SUPREME starring Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow has been packing in the audiences and racking up the plaudits since its release at the end of 2025. The film follows a talented table tennis player called Marty Mauser who makes it to the top of the world game while pulling off a series of unlikely hustles along the way. Marty Mauser is based on a real-life character called Marty Reisman, born in New York in 1930, died in New York in 2012.
I met the real Marty in 2001 when I interviewed him for BBC TV when he visited Manchester, England. Later that year, having left the BBC to set up my own production company, Northern River, I spent a week in New York with a camera crew (Kevin Roberts, Peter Skeaping-Brown) getting to know much more about Marty by talking to himself, his wife Yoshiko, his lifelong friend the comedian Jackie Mason, the table tennis historian Tim Boggan, Scott Gordon of the US Hardbat Association, and many more. From this we produced an hour-long documentary, 'The Marty Reisman Story' which I was confident would be snapped up by one of the UK TV channels. I was wrong. No-one was interested. But that was then and this is now and suddenly there's worldwide interest. I knew it was a good story!
