BBC (Be Bloody Careful…)
Let’s get rid of the Beeb they say,
it’s all over the news today,
makes no sense, past its time,
we’re all watching Netflix and Amazon Prime,
and no-one can afford to pay
the fee (at 42 pence per day);
it must adjust to pass muster
or it’ll ‘disappear like Blockbuster’.
Let’s get rid of the BBC
by making it easy to dodge the fee,
the world has changed, we no longer care
about keeping Newsnight on the air,
let’s dumb down the conversation
so no more shall nation speak peace unto nation.
I can’t help seeing that the people calling
for the Beeb to change have had a mauling
from the journalists and the interviews,
the correspondents who fill the News,
but somehow seem not to have spotted
that this is just what the last lot did,
that the pundits who think Dominic Cummings is bossier
are the same who exposed Blair’s dodgy dossier,
and that all of a sudden they take the side
of the poorest - whose existence they’ve thus far denied –
starting a process guaranteed to emasculate
a cornerstone of the British state,
and leaving the field, with the BBC off it,
clear for a media driven by profit.
The Conservatives still feel deflowered
by Paxman’s grilling of Michael Howard,
by not letting a minister off the hook:
democracy? No, not in their book!
Serving the people is a different game,
like starving councils of cash and then they blame
the councils for cutting their service,
and the NHS for lack of nurses,
and how much easier will all that be
with no pesky reporters from the BBC?
Perhaps to some it’s the perfect time
to commit a gross and cultural crime.
Uncharted seas ahead and much to fish for –
but hook the BBC? Take care what you wish for.
